Trezor Safe 5 Review

After Trezor announced their new hardware wallet, the Trezor Safe 3, at the end of 2023, it was immediately clear that another new Trezor wallet was on its way: one with a touchscreen.

Eventually, the Trezor Safe 5 was launched in 2024. The biggest addition compared to its predecessors, the Trezor One and Trezor T, was the inclusion of a Secure Element (security chip). The Trezor Safe 3 seems to be the successor to the Trezor One, while the Trezor Safe 5 serves as the successor to the Trezor T due to its touchscreen functionality.

We’ve thoroughly tested the Trezor Safe 5 and compiled all its pros and cons on this page.

Advantages of Trezor Safe 5

  • Touchscreen: This is what sets the Safe 5 apart from the Safe 3. The Trezor Safe 5 features a color touchscreen and provides subtle vibrations for user actions, similar to a smartphone. Together, these features deliver an excellent user experience.
  • 100% open-source: Trezor's software is fully open-source, allowing the community to verify its integrity.
  • Security chip (Secure Element CC EAL 6+): Like the Trezor Safe 3, the Trezor Safe 5 includes a security chip. Its predecessors, the Trezor One and Trezor T, did not have this feature.
  • Security seal on the Trezor Safe 5: The hardware wallet itself has a security seal placed over the USB-C port.
  • Bitcoin-only firmware option: Like all Trezors, the Trezor Safe 5 allows users to install Bitcoin-only firmware, ideal for those who want to exclusively manage Bitcoin.
  • Available in multiple colors: The wallet is available in three variants, each with a different-colored back: Black Graphite, Green Beryl, and Violet Ore.

Disadvantages of Trezor Safe 5

  • No iOS (iPhone) support: The Trezor Safe 5 cannot be used with an iPhone. This limitation applies to all Trezor hardware wallets. While there is an iPhone app, it only allows you to view wallets, not perform transactions. If you’re an iOS user looking for a hardware wallet, we recommend a Ledger (except for the Ledger Nano S Plus).
  • No Bluetooth / works only with a cable: The Trezor Safe 5 functions exclusively via cable. It also cannot be recharged.
  • Does not support all new networks: While it’s not unusual for hardware wallets to lack support for newer networks due to development time, Trezor primarily focuses on Ethereum and Solana tokens for altcoins. Other hardware wallets, such as Ledger, already support more recent networks.

Good to know

  • USB-C to USB-C cable: The included cable is a USB-C to USB-C cable. If you want to use the Safe 5 with a PC that only has a USB-A port, you’ll need to provide your own USB-C to USB-A cable. The Safe 5 itself has a USB-C port.

Who is the Trezor Safe 5 suitable for?

We recommend the Trezor Safe 5 to anyone who:

  • Wants to use it with a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer or an Android phone.
  • Intends to use it daily or weekly.

If you don’t plan to use the wallet often, the Trezor Safe 3 might suffice. The Safe 3 features a smaller, non-color display and only two buttons for operation, making it less user-friendly. However, for infrequent use, this doesn’t matter as much.
