Seed phrase, recovery seed, recovery words, mnemonic phrase and crypto words
The terms in the title of this section are all used for the same thing: 12 to 24 words that your wallet generates when setting up. These words are a translation of a cryptographic key based on the bip39 word list. We explain what this is in the next section. It is important that you record these words correctly and store them securely. The best option is a metal seed backup such as the SOLIDHODL. Because it protects against extreme conditions.
If something goes wrong with your wallet, your seed phrase is your salvation to restore access to your crypto.
Bip39 glossary
Bip39 glossary is a list of 2048 words. You may have also come across the term 'bip39' or 'bip39 word list'. These refer to the same thing. Your seed phrase consists of 12 to 24 words from this word list of 2048 words. The same word may appear more than once in your seed phrase. The order of words is also important.
Hardware and software wallets seed phrase backups
Hardware and software wallets are the two types of wallets that create a seed phrase at setup time. If your crypto is on an exchange, or with an external party, you will not get a seed phrase. This external party manages those seed phrases in that case.
Well-known software wallets that create a seed phrase are Metamask and Binance Chain wallet. Well-known hardware wallets are the Ledger Nano X, Nano S and SafePal S1.
