SafePal S1 (Pro) Review
SafePal was founded in 2018. By October of that year, it quickly gained recognition after Binance Labs invested in the company. Since May 2019, SafePal has been offering the SafePal S1 hardware wallet.
The original SafePal S1 has since been updated to include a USB-C port. Additionally, the SafePal S1 Pro was released, which looks almost identical but features an aluminum casing, hardened steel, and a better battery. The SafePal S1 and S1 Pro function in exactly the same way.

Advantages of the SafePal S1 (Pro)
- Air-gapped usage: The SafePal S1 is designed to be used air-gapped—this is the only way to use it. SafePal was one of the first to introduce an air-gapped hardware wallet. In theory, air-gapped wallets are considered more secure than those using cables or Bluetooth, as there is no direct connection to another device.
- Supports Bitcoin and altcoins: The S1 supports Bitcoin and a wide range of altcoins. It is compatible with tokens from networks such as Polygon, Solana, Binance Chain (BEP-20), Arbitrum, Base, and Ethereum. Among the well-known cryptocurrencies, Cardano and Kaspa are the only ones we found that are not supported by the SafePal S1.
- Security seal on the packaging: The SafePal S1 box features a security seal, which allows you to check if the packaging has been tampered with.
- D-pad navigation: The S1 is equipped with a D-pad, providing five buttons: up, down, left, right, and OK. This makes navigating through menus much easier compared to wallets with only two buttons, which are common in hardware wallets under €100.
- Excellent pricing: The S1 is priced at approximately €74.95, making it the most affordable air-gapped hardware wallet available.
Disadvantages of the SafePal S1 (Pro)
- Not open-source: The SafePal S1 is closed-source, meaning its code is not publicly available. While not everyone finds this important, some crypto users highly value open-source security. SafePal claims that its latest wallet, the SafePal X1, is open-source. There are also reports indicating that SafePal plans to make the S1 open-source in the future.
- Not compatible with all computers: Since the SafePal S1 is an air-gapped wallet, the device you use it with (mobile/PC) must have a camera. Not all PCs are equipped with one, though most laptops do.
Good to know
- Air-gapped only: The S1 can only be used air-gapped. It does not support connections via cable or Bluetooth.
Who is the SafePal S1 (Pro) suitable for?
We recommend the SafePal S1 for anyone who:
- Wants to use an air-gapped wallet.
- Wants to manage both Bitcoin and altcoins.
- Has an iOS and/or Android phone.
If you have a higher budget, you might also consider the Keystone 3 Pro or OneKey Pro.
The SafePal S1 can also be used with a Windows or macOS laptop (PC), but a built-in camera is required. Since this setup is generally less convenient, we don’t specifically recommend it, but it is an option.
